I always carry a folding liner-lock knife everywhere. I usually carry my backpack wherever I go, which I keep several useful tools in it. And if I have my toolbox with me, I don't need a multitool. I don't have multitools in my toolbox because, well, my toolbox is full of the proper tools. Even though the Leatherman is ergonomically a better multi-tool, if I don't have it with me, well, then. As a result, the tool I have on hand is the Swiss Army knife. I find carrying a Leatherman in a pocket is not as comfortable, and the holster is too obtrusive, so I tend not to carry mine. The Swiss Army Knife form factor (rounded edges and corners) means they slip in and out of pockets easily, don't leave obvious creases, bulges, and wear-patterns in clothing, and are fairly unnoticeable in everyday life. But, and this may be a personal bias, they aren't 'comfortable' to carry around. The Leatherman series of tools are quite good, too. If you can't get the right tool, this is an acceptable backup: Small enough to always carry with me, which is an important point - the best tool for the job is the one you have with you. It's gotten me out of a pinch many times, and can supplement existing tools in some cases. That being said - I find the "Mechanic" Swiss Army Knife is very useful to have around. Rarely am I so far "in the woods" that I can't go back to my desk/shop and get the correct tool. The right tool for the job is always the best tool. Having always carried some form of Swiss Army knife in my pocket for the last 40 years, I'm going to agree with the above. Half decent screw drivers, and nut drivers for every task in a portable case. Personally, I don't carry one now, but when I did (and I still have it in my desk), a nice sharp folding pocket knife and a folding screw driver and tool set (they are about the size of a paper back book). They are great at nothing and bad at everything.
